Of course, his motivations are all wrong as are his assumptions about Yasuko’s motivations. He’s been worried about the latter point all of his life and he’s miffed that she won’t let him help now that he’s older. Ryūji is rightfully concerned that they can’t afford college and that Yasuko will kill herself, figuratively, if not literally, trying to make that happen. But this definitely meant going to college too, Yasuko even says as much in previous conversations with Ryūji and there’s little point otherwise in their discussion about affording it. Yes, her dream was for Ryūji to be respectable/successful and study. It’s important to the argument at hand (essentially, he’s saying here’s the money which you so obviously need to make your dream come true), but it’s even more important to the story as a whole as we’ll see next week in Chapter 1 of Book 10. On page 206, as Ryūji is unloading his feelings, he throws the envelope containing his wages (and Taiga’s) for the past two days at Yasuko’s feet. One last bit which is really important though and which is greatly diminished in the anime, much to detriment of story IMHO. I think it’s interesting that he is immediately upset by what he said (although it can’t compare to how devastated Yasuko is) and that he is very mindful about how it changed or tainted all of his happy memories with Yasuko. He thinks she regrets having given birth to him and he in turn feels like nothing but a burden to her he feels like she could have the things in life she wanted without him instead of foisting those things upon him he feels like he should never have been born. Neither side is able to understand what the other is feeling or what is motivating them. It’s Yasuko’s job to take care of Ryūji and his job to trust her, but if Yasuko were a little more flexible Ryūji could work and contribute to the household income. It’s a shame that this couldn’t have been hashed out more rationally (although that would have been far less dramatic to read, eh?) because both sides have a point. Unfortunately, we also have to read the very hurtful things Ryūji says to Yasuko on pages 206 and 207. Even though Taiga is perfectly capable of defending herself, I love how it’s mentioned on page 205 that Ryūji instinctively pulls Taiga close to protect her when Taiga’s mom tries to grab her. And then enter Taiga’s mom and Yasuko, reality starts to creep in, and things seem to be falling apart already. Taiga implored him not to laugh at her he knows that he would never laugh at Taiga’s feelings, but he doesn’t want anyone to laugh at or destroy his dream either. Graduate, get a job, take care of Yasuko, and live happily ever after with Taiga. It’s a beautiful dream that he thinks is all set up. (Incidentally, I thought that it was much more appropriate here in the LN that Taiga made it to the job before Ryūji and was actually waiting for him, p. Taiga didn’t runaway completely, she stayed with him at the patisserie job and said she wants to talk to him.
